Trust is essential to cooperation as algorithms cross borders and enter the cyberspace, said Song Juntao, vice-chair of the World Internet Conference (WIC) Specialized Committee on E-Commerce.

Song said that even when there is consensus on an algorithm in one country, countries still need to find common ground when that algorithm is used across borders. Whether governments work together directly or cooperate through organizations such as the WIC, he said, the first priority is to build trust.

The principle of openness, which is a key topic of the 2026 WIC Wuzhen Summit, is essential for building trust in technology and algorithms, as well as trust between countries as they work more closely on governance, Song noted.

The World Internet Conference (WIC) was established as an international organization on July 12, 2022, headquartered in Beijing, China. It was jointly initiated by Global System for Mobile Communication Association (GSMA), National Computer Network Emergency Response Technical Team/Coordination Center of China (CNCERT), China Internet Network Information Center (CNNIC), Alibaba Group, Tencent, and Zhijiang Lab.
