The World Internet Conference (WIC) held an international symposium on cross-border e-commerce in Jakarta, Indonesia, on Sept 3, under the theme "Silk Road Links Businesses, Smart Trade for Win-Win."

Liang Hao, executive deputy secretary-general of WIC; Vinsensius Jemadou, senior expert adviser on tourism and creative economy of Ministry of Tourism of the Republic of Indonesia; and Li Hongwei, minister counsellor of the Embassy of the People's Republic of China in Indonesia, attended the symposium and delivered remarks.
The symposium concluded that cross-border e-commerce is currently at a critical stage of structural reshaping and in-depth transformation. The global governance system for cross-border e-commerce is being further improved, with new rules in areas such as fiscal and tax transparency, data security, and green and low-carbon development being introduced in succession, placing higher demands on companies' compliance capabilities. At the same time, adjustments in the geopolitical and economic landscape and sharp fluctuations in logistics costs have made a business model relying solely on high-volume sales of low-priced goods increasingly unsustainable.
Against this backdrop, participants called for all parties to strengthen compliance and make compliance operations a core competitive strength; harness digital technologies to improve quality and efficiency across the entire value chain; and expand cooperation by promoting digitalization and cross-border mutual recognition of trade documents. These efforts would help foster an open, inclusive, and mutually beneficial ecosystem for cross-border digital trade.
During the keynote session, speakers from international organizations, WIC member organizations, and Indonesian e-commerce companies delivered speeches on topics including compliance practices, supply chain collaboration, and how AI is being applied in cross-border e-commerce.

The roundtable discussion focused on the theme "Coordinated Development of Cross-Border E-Commerce and Local Ecosystems," where participants discussed closer integration between cross-border platforms and local logistics, payment, and other service ecosystems, in a bid to address operational challenges and build stronger collaboration mechanisms.
During the symposium, WIC released the 2026 World Internet Conference Collection of Cross-Border E-Commerce Practice Cases and the Cross-Border E-Commerce Practice Guide for Small and Medium-Sized Enterprises. The two publications bring together proven industry practices and offer practical support to help small and medium-sized enterprises integrate more effectively into the global cross-border e-commerce ecosystem.

The symposium was hosted by WIC and organized by the China Council for the Promotion of International Trade Commercial Sub-Council. More than 100 participants attended, including representatives from international organizations, Chinese diplomatic missions in Indonesia, WIC member organizations, member organizations of the WIC Specialized Committee on E-Commerce, organizations featured in the Case Collection, and businesses across the cross-border e-commerce supply chain.
The World Internet Conference (WIC) was established as an international organization on July 12, 2022, headquartered in Beijing, China. It was jointly initiated by Global System for Mobile Communication Association (GSMA), National Computer Network Emergency Response Technical Team/Coordination Center of China (CNCERT), China Internet Network Information Center (CNNIC), Alibaba Group, Tencent, and Zhijiang Lab.
