XR technology brings Qin culture to life via digital innovation
The 2026 WIC Digital Silk Road Development Forum will be held on July 21-22 in Xi'an, capital of Shaanxi province. Ahead of the forum, visits to local digital innovation projects offered fresh insights into how technology is reshaping cultural experiences.
At the Terracotta Warriors site, an XR experience demonstrated how extended reality can deepen public engagement with history. Based on more than five decades of archaeological research and geophysical survey data, the project digitally reconstructs the underground mausoleum of China's First Emperor, allowing visitors to explore spaces that remain inaccessible to the public.
Using ultra-high-definition visuals, six-degrees-of-freedom motion tracking and interactive technologies, the experience combines historical archaeological research, historical interpretation with immersive storytelling. It offers new ways to engage with Qin culture while supporting digital preservation and passing on of cultural heritage.
The growing application of immersive technologies in the cultural sector reflects one of the themes of the 2026 WIC Digital Silk Road Development Forum — about cultural heritage preservation and transmission in the digital intelligence era.

The World Internet Conference (WIC) was established as an international organization on July 12, 2022, headquartered in Beijing, China. It was jointly initiated by Global System for Mobile Communication Association (GSMA), National Computer Network Emergency Response Technical Team/Coordination Center of China (CNCERT), China Internet Network Information Center (CNNIC), Alibaba Group, Tencent, and Zhijiang Lab.
