As the global open-source artificial intelligence ecosystem continues to expand beyond code sharing to encompass data, computing resources and models, open source is becoming an increasingly important foundation for making AI more inclusive and responsible.

At the same time, as AI technologies are deployed more widely around the world, differences in governance approaches, policy frameworks and implementation capacities have become increasingly evident. Against this backdrop, it is imperative for the international community to promote international dialogue and build consensus on open innovation, trustworthy governance, standards coordination and best practices in order to advance the responsible development of AI.

To foster dialogue across the global AI community and strengthen international consensus, the World Internet Conference (WIC) Specialized Committee on AI will host a workshop under the theme "Advancing Responsible AI: Open Source for Inclusive Development and Collaborative Governance" in Geneva, Switzerland, on July 8, on the sidelines of the AI for Good Global Summit that is set to take place from July 7 to 10.

The workshop will bring together leading AI experts and industry representatives from around the world to discuss pathways for advancing inclusive open-source AI development and collaborative governance.

Opening remarks will be delivered by Francis Gurry, vice chairman of the WIC and former director-general of the World Intellectual Property Organization (WIPO), and Seizo Onoe, director of the Telecommunication Standardization Bureau (TSB) of the International Telecommunication Union (ITU).

The workshop will feature themed presentations given by distinguished experts, including Dame Wendy Hall, co-chair of the WIC Specialized Committee on AI and Fellow of the Royal Society; John Higgins, co-lead of the Standards Promotion Program of the Specialized Committee on AI and chair of the International AI Governance Association (IAGA) and Zeng Yi, vice chair of the Specialized Committee on AI, co-lead of the AI Safety and Governance Program.

Other experts who will speak at the event include Wang Jianbing, vice secretary-general of the Cybersecurity Association of China; Wei Kai, vice chair of the Specialized Committee on AI and director of the Research Institute of AI at the China Academy of Information and Communications Technology (CAICT); Luis Seco, chair of the Centre for Sustainable Development at the Fields Institute; Maxime Stauffer, founder and CEO of the Simon Institute for Longterm Governance (SI); and Meng Wei, head of Standard and Open Source Strategy at ZTE.
