The World Internet Conference (WIC) staged an online information session recently to present the 2026 Global Youth Leadership Program (GYLP) to a large audience worldwide. Themed on Connecting the Future, Empowering Youth, the event drew the participation of more than 200 young people from 66 countries and regions.

In a video message to the event, Francis Gurry, vice-chair of the WIC and former director-general of the World Intellectual Property Organization, emphasized the growing role of young people as “digital natives” in driving technological innovation, global governance and international cooperation. Moreover, he encouraged young people around the world to apply for the program and actively contribute to shaping the global digital future.

Ren Xianliang, secretary-general of the WIC, said the program was designed to serve as an international platform for exchanges, learning, and collaboration among young people worldwide. He noted that it enables participants to make their voices heard on the global stage, receive comprehensive support and grow together with the WIC organization. Ren added that the WIC would continue to refine the program and expand opportunities for youth engagement in global digital development and governance.

Four global youth leaders selected in previous programs — Fernanda Chima from Mexico, Mohammed Alfarra from Germany, Peru’s Giannina Honorio Heredia and James Thomas Terhemba from Nigeria — shared their application experiences and reflected on the opportunities and benefits they had gained through the program.

Representatives of the WIC Secretariat introduced the program framework — including application requirements, timelines and submission procedures — and answered questions from prospective applicants during the session.

Launched by the WIC international organization in 2023, the GYLP identifies outstanding youth in the internet and digital sectors, while supporting a range of youth-focused activities spanning conferences, learning and research tours.

Over the past three years, the program has attracted participants from more than 120 countries and regions.

Applications for the 2026 GYLP are now open and will close on July 24. Young people from around the world are invited to apply, connect with global peers, and help shape a shared digital future.

The World Internet Conference (WIC) was established as an international organization on July 12, 2022, headquartered in Beijing, China. It was jointly initiated by Global System for Mobile Communication Association (GSMA), National Computer Network Emergency Response Technical Team/Coordination Center of China (CNCERT), China Internet Network Information Center (CNNIC), Alibaba Group, Tencent, and Zhijiang Lab.
