Google and Xreal — a leading tech company based in Wuxi National Hi-Tech District — unveiled Project Aura, the world's first AR glasses powered by Android XR, at the Google I/O 2025 on May 21.

Marking a significant milestone in the evolution of spatial computing, Project Aura represents the first time a Wuxi-based technology company has taken on a foundational role as an ecosystem partner in the global development of XR operating systems.

As a global pioneer in consumer-grade AR glasses, Xreal is among the first global partners of Android XR and has contributed key technologies, including optical display systems, spatial computing algorithms, and proprietary chipsets. It has played a central role in building the Android XR ecosystem, making it one of the few Chinese companies in the XR industry with both core product capabilities and ecosystem-level influence.

Xreal introduced its first R&D and mass production base for optical modules in Wuxi National Hi-Tech District in 2020. Leveraging Wuxi's robust industrial foundation, Xreal has built an end-to-end spatial computing capability covering optics, algorithms, chips, and operating systems. Wuxi has since become the world's first mass production hub for AR optical modules.
