"While innovative solutions are needed to address the current global challenges in sustainable development, artificial intelligence (AI) technology comes as a major tool to achieve the sustainable development goals", Serge Stinckwich, head of research at the United Nations University Institute in Macau, said at the "AI Governance and Sustainable Development: for Good and for All" Workshop during the 2025 World Internet Conference Asia-Pacific Summit in Hong Kong on April 14.

AI can help decision-makers better understand complex social and environmental issues through simulation and data analysis, thereby formulating more inclusive policies, according to Stinckwich.

He emphasized that interdisciplinary collaboration is key to driving sustainable development, and the application of AI technology should not be restricted to the technical field alone. It requires the integration of multiple disciplines to ensure the comprehensiveness and effectiveness of decision-making, he added.

Stinckwich also noted that the popularization and application of AI must be done with the diversity of society in mind, ensuring that different voices can be heard. By simulating human social behavior through AI systems, policy effects can be more accurately assessed, and the lack of representation in traditional decision-making models can be avoided, according to him.

"Only by fully considering the interests of all parties in the decision-making process, can true sustainable development be achieved", he said.

The World Internet Conference (WIC) was established as an international organization on July 12, 2022, headquartered in Beijing, China. It was jointly initiated by Global System for Mobile Communication Association (GSMA), National Computer Network Emergency Response Technical Team/Coordination Center of China (CNCERT), China Internet Network Information Center (CNNIC), Alibaba Group, Tencent, and Zhijiang Lab.
